The nano-mesoporous material SBA (Santa Barbara Amorphous)-15 was synthesized using the hydrothermal method. Hg2+ was adsorbed by SBA-15 and then the S2− in the aqueous phase by (SBA-15)-Hg(II), with the hope that materials with better S2− adsorption properties can be obtained. The relevant materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, 77 K nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and related product characteristics were determined. In this work, the adsorption conditions of S2− onto (SBA-15)-Hg(II) were optimized. Adsorption efficiency reached about 92% and the adsorption capacity 55.02 mg/g. Studies of the system's adsorption kinetics showed that the pseudo-second-order equation applies. The thermodynamic results indicated that ΔG0 < 0, ΔH0 = −28.56 kJ/mol, ΔS0 = −81.136 J/(mol·K), and that adsorption is exothermic, enthalpy decreases and the reaction is spontaneous. This accords with Freundlich isothermal adsorption equation.

a b s t r a c tThe present study deals with the loading of silver sulfadiazine into ordered mesoporous silica material by post-impregnation method and its effect on the in vitro release kinetics and antimicrobial property of the drug. The formulated SBA-15 silica material with rope-like morphology and SBA-15-silver sulfadiazine (SBA-AgSD) were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometer, small and wide-angle powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Thermo-gravimetric analysis of SBA-AgSD revealed a high loading amount of 52.87%. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis confirmed the drug entrapment into host material by revealing a reduced surface area (214 m 2 /g) and pore diameter (6.7 nm) of the SBA-AgSD. The controlled release of silver sulfadiazine drug from the mesoporous silica to simulated gastric, intestinal and body fluids was evaluated. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model fits the drug release data with the non-Fickian diffusion model and zero order kinetics of SBA-AgSD. The antibacterial performance of the SBA-AgSD was evaluated with respect to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The controlled drug delivery of the SBA-AgSD revealed improved antibacterial activity, thus endorsing its applicability in effective wound dressing.

Cephalosporins belong the largest class of antibiotics used in the treatment of a wide range of infectious diseases caused by susceptible organisms. In the present study, we chose two typical antibiotics cefalexin/cefixime based on their structure, and investigated the interaction of cephalexin/cefixime with bovine serum albumin (BSA) using UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and molecular modeling approaches. Spectroscopic experiments revealed the formation of a BSA − cefalexin/cefixime complex. The binding parameters calculated using a modified Stern − Volmer method and the Scatchard method reached 10 3 -10 4 L·mol −1 . Thermodynamic parameter studies revealed that binding characteristics by negative enthalpy and positive entropy changes, and electrostatic interactions play a major role. Site marker competitive displacement experiments and molecular modeling approaches demonstrated that cefalexin and cefixime bind with appropriate affinity to site I (subdomain IIA) of BSA. Furthermore, synchronous fluorescence spectra, CD spectra and molecular modeling results indicated that the secondary structure of BSA was changed in the presence of cefalexin and cefixime. Additionally, the effects of metal ions on the BSA − cefalexin/cefixime system were also assessed.
