Inclusion effect of soybean meal, fermented soybean meal, and Saccharina japonica in extruded pellet for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus, Reeve 1846)

Abstract: Inclusion effect of soybean meal (SBM) and fermented SBM (FSM) in extruded pellet for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus) was compared in abalone farm. Dietary inclusion effect of the combined macroalgae (MA) (Undaria pinnatifida and Hizikia fusiforme) and a single Saccharina japonica on abalone was also compared. Three thousand six hundred juvenile abalone were purchased from a private hatchery and acclimated to the experimental conditions for 2 weeks. Six 5-ton flow-through raceway tanks were used, and abalon… Show more

“…The red grid represents essential amino acid, while the black grid represents non-essential amino acid (INRA 2004). Due to its high quality and low price, soybean meal has gradually replaced expensive fish protein powder and is playing an increasingly important role in aquaculture (Yun et al 2018). Soybean protein concentrate (SPC) can be used to largely replace skimmed milk powder and milk for feeding calves and can also be used as a pre-fermented feed to replace skimmed milk powder, whey protein, and fish protein powder for piglets (Dei.…”

“…Aside from the noodle form commonly used in feeding experiments at SEAFDEC/AQD, other abalone diet forms include 0.15 cm thick sheets, cut into 1 cm 2 (Ansary et al, 2019;Choi et al, 2018;Jung et al, 2016;Kim et al, 2016); 2 × 2 × 3.5 cm cubes (Angell et al, 2012); 0.5 cm dia tablets (Susanto et al, 2016); 4 × 3 × 2 mm flat pellets (Bansemer et al, 2014); pellets (Yun et al, 2018); and powder, crumble and chips (Kirkendale et al, 2010), among others. For a crawling grazer, however, a very thin and flattened feed may be easier to access and forage.…”

“…Therefore, there is a growing interest in exploring alternative protein sources for fish feed, such as soybean and seaweed. Soybean is a cost-effective, and widely available plant protein source [12,13], while seaweeds offer unique nutritional properties and are natural forage for fish [14]. These alternative ingredients have been investigated as partial or total replacements to improve the growth performance and feed efficiency of tilapia.…”
