Incisors of the Rabbit: Morphology, Histology, and Development

Abstract: A detailed morphologic and histologic de-scription of each deciduous and permanent incisor of the rabbit is presented, together with the chronology of their prenatal and postnatal development. The deciduous incisors are teeth of limited growth, but the permanent incisors grow continuously. The rabbit is used frequently in experimental investigations. A review of the literature has shown that the incisors of rabbits have been investigated by a number of observers with different results. The purpose of this inves… Show more

“…As to the number of mandibular permanent cheek-teeth of rabbits, our observations were similar to those of OWEN (1845), ABBOT (1887), DEWEY (1907), CARADONNA (1909), TOMES (1914), LESBRE (1922, WIDDOWSON (1952), GRASSE and DEKEYSER (1955), PAGANO (1965), MILES and POOLE (1967), PEYER (1968), MAYER (1969), LISTGARTEN andKAMIN (1969), CRAIGIE (1970), VIEIRA (1971), APRILE et al (1971), andHIRSCHFELD et al (1973). We also agree with the term premolars for the two first cheek-teeth of the mandible (ROUSSEAU, 1839;OWEN.…”

“…As to the number of permanent maxillary cheek-teeth of rabbits, our observations were similar to those of OWEN (1845), ABBOT (1887), DEWEY (1907), CARADONNA (1909), TOMES (1914), LESBRE (1922, WIDDOWSON (1952), GRASSE and DEKEYSER (1955), PAGANO (1965), MILES andPOOLE (1967), PEYER (1968), MAYER (1969), LISTGARTEN and KAMIN (1969), CRAIGIE (1970, VIEIRA (1971), ORR (1971, APRILE et al (1971) andHIRSCHFELD et al (1973). We also agree with the denomination of premolars to the three first cheek-teeth of the maxilla, suggested by ROUSSEAU (1839), OWEN (1845), DEWEY (1907), CARADONNA (1909, TOMES (1914), WIDDOWSON (1952), GRASSE and DEKEYSER (1955), PAGANO (1965), EHRMAN (1967), PEYER (1968), MAYER (1969), LISTGARTEN andKAMIN (1969), CRAIGIE (1970), VIEIRA (1971) andAPRILE et al (1971) since, as it occurs in human dentition, these teeth are the successors of the correspondent deciduous molars.…”

“…such an investigation was undertaken. Previous publications reported on the incisors [Hirschfeld et al, 1973) and on the symphysis menti [Hirschfeld et al, 19771 of these animals; the present report concerns itself with the cheek teeth. Sev 1 The authors thank Mrs. M. Talbi.…”
