“…This suggests strongly that there is minimal exchange of individuals and little hope that one population could repopulate the other. Recent results confirm the lack of exchange between the two groups, and further indicate the two groups are actually cryptic species (Burford and Larson 2007;Burford and Bernardi 2008).…”

“…Evidence of incipient speciation in blue rockfish (S. mystinus) has been shown using both mtDNA sequences and microsatellite information (Burford and Bernardi 2008). A greater level of divergence was found between the two types of blue rockfish than has been reported between the sister species gopher rockfish (S. carnatus) and black and yellow rockfish (S. chrysomelas) (Narum et al 2004).…”

“…From the extracted genomic DNA, we amplified 6 micro satellite loci de signed from Sebastes rastrelliger , GenBank Accession numbers: AF269054-57, AF269059, AF 269061, respectively; Buonaccorsi et al 2004, Westerman et al 2005, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We followed the protocol outlined in Burford & Lar son (2007) and Burford & Bernardi (2008) for fragment amplification and scoring of these 6 microsatellite loci. In total, we analyzed 760 individuals from 9 locations for the 2001 year-class and 1478 individuals from 13 locations for the 2002 year-class ( Fig.…”

“…We ran all juveniles from both year-classes and all adults together and generated posterior probabilities in STRUCTURE using 100 000 iterations of the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method after an initial burn-in period of 40 000 iterations. We averaged the posterior probabilities for each individual over the 5 runs and, in contrast to previous analyses (Burford & Bernardi 2008, Burford 2009), we assigned individuals with a posterior probability as signment of 0.75 or greater to one of the 2 species (following Burford et al 2011). We verified K and the stability of other model parameters by running the model with 5 replicates and ΔK-values ranging from 1 to 5 and analyzing the log-likelihood, the data estimate [ln(Pr(X/K))], and variance structure of the estimated log (natural) probability for different Ks (Appendix 2).…”
