Incidental prostate cancer: a 10-year review of a tertiary center, Tehran, Iran

Abstract: ObjectiveIncidental prostate cancer (IPCa) is defined as a symptom-free cancer unexpectedly discovered upon microscopic examination of resected tissue. The aim of this study was to report the correlation between some specific clinical criteria in patients incidentally diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy (OP) after clinically suspected benign prostatic hyperplasia.Patients and methodsThis was a cross-sectional, retrospective study. “…Although there is some variation in cancer prevalence, prostate cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States of America (USA), Europe and Oceania in 2012 [9]. In the past decade, much attention has been focused on prostate cancer [10] due to the alarming number of patients and the high mortality rate [11,12]. In fact, prostate cancer is the second most deadly malignancy in men after skin cancer [13].…”

“…52 Incidental Prostate Cancer A prostate biopsy is routinely performed to diagnose prostate cancer, but false negative results may be reported. [55][56][57][58] Different from other laser therapy for BPH, HoLEP is a surgical approach which provides a specimen for pathologic examination and therefore final specimen histology might disclose incidental prostate cancer (IPca). Despite preoperative prostate cancer risk assessment with biopsy, up to 13% of patients will be diagnosed with IPca following HoLEP.…”

“…Regarding lab tests, the effectiveness of serum prostate‐specific antigen and semen culture in the evaluation of CPPS remains unclear. If in CPPS cases a statistically significant elevation of serum prostate‐specific antigen was registered, prostate cancer should be evaluated (Abedi, Fallah‐Karkan, Allameh, Ranjbar, & Shadmehr, ; Nadler et al, ), also semen culture is not recommended as a first‐line test of diagnostic consideration (Lee & Choi, ). On the other side, imaging investigations using color Doppler ultrasonography have shown CPPS to be related with increased prostatic blood flow (Cho, Keener, Nghiem, Winter, & Krieger, ).…”
