Incidental findings of implant complications on postimplantation CBCTs: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Despite the popularity of dental implants, the surgical placement of these implants is not a riskless procedure. Implant mal-positioning might be life-threatening and can lead to serious bleeding, airway obstruction, and unnecessary postoperative surgeries. Complications of dental implants are not obsolete and dental implant associated problems may not be apparent immediately. Surgeons must have proper training and use evidenced-based treatment planning in order to prevent dental implant complications.

“…Not only can the implant placement be a timely process, these surgeries can also come with complications such as sinus penetration, nerve damage, bleeding, and perforations of the bone plate. 59 Furthermore, dental implants are not invincible and can be even more susceptible to oral bacteria and require proper follow-up and maintenance. 60 Complications such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are prevalent; the prevalence of implants with peri-implant mucositis is around 80%, whereas peri-implantitis affects approximately 12%-66%.…”

“…First, we would like to thank the Nascimento et al group for their comprehensive letter regarding our paper, recently published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research. 1 This was a cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of implant positioning issues as reflected in postimplantation cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT). As a cross-sectional study of this kind, it indeed has several shortcomings that need to be taken into consideration when evaluating the literature in general and we were trying to emphasize that in our discussion.…”

“…The use of dental implants is not without complications. During the surgical drilling the surgeon can breach the sinus floor, nasal floor, buccal, or lingual bone plates . This can cause injury for adjacent roots and damage the inferior alveolar nerve which, in some cases, causes a complete and non‐reversible loss of sensation.…”
