Incidence, treatment, in-hospital mortality and one-year outcomes of acute myocardial infarction in Poland in 2009–2012 — nationwide AMI-PL database

Abstract: Standards of care and early outcomes in AMI in Poland are similar to Western countries. The major cause of higher mortality due to AMI in the Polish population is a high incidence of AMI, indicating a need for intensification of primary prevention programmes. Secondary prevention is also underused, especially in the field of cardiac rehabilitation.

“…Trzeciak et al [4] revealed that patients aged less than 40 years represent 1.2% of all patients with MI. However, if the age of 45 years would be established as the cut-off age the percentage of patients would increase to 3.2%, as estimated by Gierlotka et al [5]. The limitation of the first study is that the data originate from only one administrative region.…”

“…According to the Cracovian Programme for Secondary Prevention of Ischaemic Heart Disease, the proportion of patients with adequate control of all major risk factors in patients one year after hospitalisation due to ischaemic heart disease is only 9% [23]. Moreover, in the nationwide POL-AMI database it was found that during one year after myocardial infarction only 22% of patients were subjected to cardiac rehabilitation, mostly during the first three months after acute myocardial infarction (79% of them) [24].…”
