Incidence of transient global amnesia in the Belluno province, Italy: 1985 through 1995

Abstract: The incidence rate of first-ever TGA registered in the province of Belluno, Italy, was closely similar to that reported in Turku, Finland and confirms that TGA is more common than has been usually proposed. We emphasize the usefulness of prospective, rather than retrospective, epidemiological studies for research on TGA.

“…In the present study, patient age, gender distribution, provoking factors, and accompanying symptoms were similar to those of previous reports on TGA patients [7,14,15]. However, DWI alterations in the hippocampal region were present in only 7.9% of our TGA patients, a much lower proportion than noted in several previous studies of TGA [6,11,16,17].…”

“…Its annual incidence has been reported to be 3.4 to 10.4 per 100,000 people. 6,[14][15][16] If we narrow it to the population older than 50 years, the incidence increases to 23.5 per 100,000 per year. 17 It is more common in individuals with migraine.…”

“…TGA is, in general, a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 5-9/100 000 per year. 9 However, there have been 35 reports of amnesia as a symptom among 274 adverse event reports between January 1998 and February 2001, which designated sildenafil as the primary suspect of various neurological disturbances. 10 PDE-5 inhibitors interact pharmacologically with nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signalling pathways.…”
