Incidence of lip and palate clefts in children in Nis from 1990 to 2007

Abstract: In the studied period, 43 children were born with the cleft lip and/or palate, equally in boys as in girls. The secondary palate clefts were most frequent. The season and order of birth had no statistical influence on the occurrence of this anomaly.

“…palate is more frequently found in males (Mitić et al 2011;Urbanova et al 2013;Lithovius et al 2014;Matthews et al 2014). It is in accordance with our previous results, especially in years the [1981][1982][1983][1984][1985][1986][1987][1988][1989][1990], where the incidence of isolated cleft palate was significantly higher in girls and total clefts significantly higher in boys.…”

“…Cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) are the most common congenital craniofacial abnormalities accompanied by aesthetic and functional deficiency (Mitic et al, 2011; Van Dyck et al, 2019). An organized multidisciplinary approach is crucial for the management of patients with CL/P, including orthodontic and surgical treatment, which are time sensitive (Mitic et al, 2011; Van Dyck et al, 2019). In order to determine the optimal time for orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to assess the level of skeletal and dental developmental status of the patient.…”
