Incidence of lethal adverse drug reactions in the comprehensive hospital drug monitoring, a 20-year survey, 1974-1993, based on the data of Berne/St. Gallen

Abstract: The patients with a lethal outcome were presented under the eight pharmacologic-therapeutic classes of drugs and the classification proposed by NS Irey. This is based on long histopathologic experience and helps to identify preventable risks.

“…Drug interactions with benzimidazoles are increasingly reported [1,2,[47][48][49][50]. However, it has been noted that the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) values of PPIs in inhibiting P-gp observed in vitro are higher than their expected intraluminal (intestinal) and plasma concentrations obtained after oral dosing in humans, making a drug-drug interaction at these levels unlikely.…”

“…Up to 10% of all admissions in general hospitals are caused by improper use of drugs and combinations of drugs, resulting in potentially severe drug-drug interactions [1,2]. Adverse drug reactions can especially be severe when these interactions involve cytotoxic anticancer agents [3,4].…”

“…Previous studies have reported different factors that predispose patients to ADRs [3][4][5][6]. In some of these studies female gender was considered an important risk factor for ADRs [3,4,6].…”

“…Literature had shown that female gender was considered as the major risk factor for occurrence of adverse drug reaction. 7,8,9,10 Along with this, some other risk factors like age, multiple drug regimen, intercurrent diseases, comorbidity, history of adverse drug reactions to the drug class, concurrent interactive drugs were also considered. 11 But there is diversity in the effect of predisposing factors to the development of adverse drug reactions.…”
