“…24 A prospective study that examined the incidence of hiatus hernia and gastroesophageal reflux in 1030 consecutive symptomatic adult Nigerian patients undergoing barium meal examination was reported in 1977. 25 The results show a very low incidence of hiatus hernia (0.39%) and an equally low incidence of gastroesophageal reflux (2.2%). It has been suggested that there is an increasing trend in the prevalence of GERD in the world over the last two decades 26 and that reflux disease is more common in Asian countries than previously recognized.…”

“…Of 1319 barium meals performed by a single radiologist in Kenya, East Africa from 1961 to 1965, hiatus hernia was detected in only one patient (0.07%) and gastro‐oesophageal reflux (GER) also in one patient (0.07%), although these conditions were specifically looked for 79 . A prospective study examining the frequency of hiatus hernia and GER in 1030 consecutive barium meal examinations in Nigeria, West Africa, from 1970 to 1972, found only four cases of hiatus hernia (0.39%) and 23 patients with GER (2.2%) 80 . Of 216 consecutive patients with Barrett's oesophagus in an oesophageal clinic in Johannesburg, South Africa, only 11 (5%) were black, although the ratio of black to white individuals in the city was 5:1 81 .…”

“…Contrary to those data, the disease is extremely rare in rural African communities. Such abnormal stomach position was revealed in four out of 1,030 examined Nigerians [ 4 ], one of 1,000 Kenyans [ 44 ] and one of 700 Tanzanians [ 19 ]. A low incidence was also reported throughout India, the Middle East and East Asia [ 9 ].…”
