“…Sev eral studies have been reported in the litera ture on the distribution of haemoglobin types in various populations of the Indian subcontinent. This has been reviewed by Saha and Banerjee [1973], Relatively fewer studies have been carried out on the distri bution of glucose-6-phosphates dehydrogen ase deficiency (G6PD) by the dyc-decolourization test [Chatterjea, 1966;Baxi et al, 1969;Saha and Banerjee, 1971a;Hakim et al, 1972], Only four previous studies have been reported among the tribal and caste groups of South India on the phenotypic distribution of G6PD [Saha et al, 1974[Saha et al, , 1976Goud and Rao, 1975;Veeraju et al, 1978]. The present study reports the results of a study which was undertaken among the different endogamous caste groups and muslims of Bengal, to examine the pheno typic distribution of haemoglobin and G6PD of red blood cells.…”
