“…In one review article, Fowkes et al report the following annual incidence rates: 2-3 per 10,000 (ages 30-49), 5 per 10,000 (ages 50-59), 10 per 10,000 (ages 60 to 69) and 20 per 10,000 (ages 70 to 79 years) 9 . Similarly, Naess et al 10 observed three times greater incidence among 70-year-olds compared with people aged 20-44.…”

“…1 An individual's absolute lifetime risk of VTE is approximately 11% 2 and its incidence rate increases exponentially with age, for both women and men. 1,3,4 Although less frequent than DVT alone (0.93 per 1000 person-years), PE with or without DVT (0.50 per 1000 person-years) 1 has a higher recurrence rate and is often fatal. 3 Most cases of DVT (90%) are located in the lower limbs, 5 particularly within the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles 6 and become symptomatic when there is proximal vein involvement.…”

“…The annual incidence of DVT is 5-20 per 10,000 subjects [1,2]. Despite delivery of appropriate medical treatment, 1-8 % of patients die from secondary PEs [3].…”
