Incidence of delirium in postoperative patients treated with total knee and hip arthroplasty

Abstract: Summary Introduction: Delirium is a common disorder that can potentiate mortality and comorbidity rates of patients hospitalized in intensive care units. Patients undergoing major orthopedic surgeries, such as knee and hip arthroplasty, are particularly vulnerable as they often have multiple risk factors for this disorder. Method: Descriptive study of the incidence of delirium in patients treated with total knee and hip arthroplasty, given the advanced age and comorbidities in this population. We evaluated … Show more

“…Then postoperative delirium received more and more attention and this trend was reversed after 2008. We identified an overall incidence of 1.00% after TKA procedures, which is much lower compared with most of the previous studies ranging from 3.1-25% [1,[8][9][10][11][12][13], with the exception of an Asian study by Huang et al…”

“…Postoperative delirium is a common complication in geriatric patients after major operations [5,6]. The reported incidence of delirium after TKA ranges from 0.59-25%, which varied among studies depending on the patient population [1,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. It has become a heavy burden on healthcare resources because it prolongs hospitalization and increases medical costs [1,4,9,[11][12][13][14].…”

“…Then postoperative delirium received more and more attention and this trend was reversed after 2008. We identified an overall incidence of 0.90% after THA procedures, which is much lower compared with the previous studies ranging from 5% to 17% [1,7,8,9]. There are two possible reasons accounting for this obvious difference.…”

“…We excluded 53 trials at the full-text review stage, including 35 without statistical differences in sleep quality between intervention and control groups, 10 without a specific number of patients with sleep problems and/or delirium, and eight that enrolled some patients without surgery. Eventually, our search strategy yielded 29 relevant trials with a total of 55,907 patients ( Figure 1 ) ( 16 18 , 27 52 ).…”
