Incidence of community onset MRSA in Australia: least reported where it is Most prevalent

Abstract: BackgroundThis is the first review of literature and synthesis of data on community onset methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CO-MRSA) infections in Australia. Incidence of CO-MRSA varies considerably in Australia, depending on geographic and demographic factors.MethodsData for the rates of MRSA infections were collected from articles identified using PubMed, Scopus, the grey literature and data from State and Federal Government Surveillance Systems. We synthesized data and developed a framework for h… Show more

“…As the distance from major cities increases, death rates increase, access to health services decline and rates of preventable hospitalisations for chronic diseases markedly rise [ 17 – 19 ]. Recent publications have identified the significant burden of infections and antimicrobial use in remote Australian committees and an upward trend of AMR [ 11 , 20 , 21 ].…”

“…In the current study, 12% of the nasal isolates were MRSA, which equates to 1.5% of the nasal swabs yielding MRSA. While there is extensive reporting that the Australian Northern Territory population has a disproportionate burden of disease caused by MRSA [14,15,27,28], little is known regarding the extent that this this is driven by MRSA carriage. One Indigenous community-based study from more than a decade ago did show significant MRSA carriage [29].…”

“…An extraordinarily high burden of end stage kidney disease is experienced in northern Australia, which disproportionately affects Aboriginal peoples [12,13]. Within this region, there is also an unusually high prevalence of S. aureus infection, much of which is associated with known community acquired strains [14,15].…”

“…Northern Australia is a large geographical region (comprising half of the Australian landmass) which is home to only 5.2% of the total population (1.3 million), and 30% of the total Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (6). Despite the sparse population, it is a region of high AMR prevalence (7) combined with a complex interplay of socio-economic factors that are likely contributing to the disease burden in this setting (8). National progress to track and respond to AMR systematically in regional and rural Australia are insufficient (7,8) and are not timely (9).…”
