Incidence of community-acquired pneumonia caused byChlamydia pneumoniae in Italian patients

Abstract: The incidence of Chlamydia pneumoniae as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia was evaluated in a one-year prospective study in 108 patients with community-acquired pneumonia. The bacteriological diagnosis was based on culture of sputum or bronchial aspirate and examination of acute and convalescent phase sera for Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila and Chlamydia pneumoniae. A definitive microbiological diagnosis was obtained in 58 (54%) patients. Chlamydia pneumoniae was the causative agent in 14 … Show more

“…C. pneumoniae was identified in 18.5% of the patients with community-acquired pneumonia, 9% of the asthmatic patients and 5% of the patients with acute exacerbations of COPD. These results are similar to those found in previous studies [5,11,13,[22][23][24][25][26]. However, poor correlation was found between PCR-EIA and rELISA serology.…”

“…pneumoniae is a worldwide respiratory pathogen involved in about 13% of community-acquired pneumonias and 5% of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in our area [10,13]. Our preliminary data represent the first evidence of association between C. pneumoniae infection and asthma attacks in our country.…”

“…The diagnostic criteria for pneumonia caused by C. pneumoniae are a four-fold or greater increase in the titer for any Ig class of antibodies to C. pneumoniae between paired serum samples or an IgG titer of^1:512, orthe presence ofIgM (^1:16) antibodies for any serum sample examined by the MIF test (1,2). The diagnosis of C. pneumoniae pneumonia in previous reports (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29) was also based on these criteria. In addition, Kauppinen et al (26), Lieberman et al (27) and Suttithawil et al (29) included a high IgA titer as one of the diagnostic criterion of acute C. pneumoniaepneumonia.…”
