The Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development developed the Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) Chicken, a superior breed of native chicken. The KUB chicken exhibited resistance to diseases, boasted lower mortality rates, and yielded more eggs compared to conventional free-range chickens. However, the KUB chickens were not immune to certain prevalent avian diseases, leading to substantial mortality and subsequent economic losses in Indonesia. This study, conducted from October to December 2021 in Central Java, aimed to determine the prevalence of various diseases in KUB chickens housed in farmer’s henhouse. Data were collected from 30 KUB chicken farmers. The results indicated the following prevalence rates for various infections: Snot at 44%, Coccidiosis at 9%, Salmonellosis at 9%, Infectious Bursal Disease at 9%, Newcastle Disease at 4%, and Helminthiosis at 4% across all sampled coops. Snot infection was notably higher in KUB Chickens, largely attributed to inadequate management, followed by Coccidiosis, Salmonellosis, and Infectious Bursal Disease. Clearly, disease prevalence in KUB chickens within a farmer’s coop can be mitigated by improved management practices and appropriate vaccination.

Avian coccidiosis remains one of the major parasitic diseases that threaten the global poultry industry. Since prevention is superior to treatment, this study focuses on eliminating the infection outside the host. To determine their effect on the viability of Eimeria tenella oocysts in vitro, allicin and alcoholic garlic extract, which are natural, less toxic, and inexpensive products, were compared to KOH 5% (chemical disinfectant) using an in vitro culture system. Three concentrations of allicin (45, 90, and 180 mg/mL) and alcoholic garlic extract (90, 180, and 360 mg/mL, were used. Subsequently, destructive and sporulation-inhibiting effects on Eimeria oocysts were detected using light and electron microscopy. Young chickens were infected with treated sporulated oocysts to determine their effect on infectivity. After 7 days pi, the percentage of excreted oocysts (oocyst shedding) was determined, and the chickens were slaughtered for histopathological examination of the cecal tissues. Under an electron microscope, allicin at a concentration of 180 mg/mL and alcoholic garlic extract at a concentration of 360 mg/mL demonstrate a high oocysticidal activity with severe destruction of the oocyst wall and the appearance of pores. In addition, both concentrations directly affected the infectivity of sporulated oocysts by reducing the shedding of oocysts and the pathological lesions of infected young chickens. We concluded that the ability of Allicin and alcoholic garlic extract to eliminate Eimeria oocysts makes them superior to chemical disinfectants as a disinfectant.

Koksidiyoz başta kanatlı hayvanlar olmak üzere birçok hayvan türünü etkileyen bir protozoon enfeksiyonudur. Enfeksiyonun etiyolojik etkenleri Eimeria cinsinde yer alan apikompleksan protozoonlardır (1). Hücre içi zorunlu yaşam sürdüren Eimeria türleri hücre invazyonu sırasında yapısal stabilitenin korunmasında rol oynayan dense granülleri, konoid, polar halka, roptri ve mikronemler gibi apikal kompleks organellere sahiptir (2). İntestinal kanala yerleşim gösteren bu protozoonlar direkt gelişmeleri ve üreme potansiyellerinin yüksek olması nedeniyle özellikle hayvan sayısının çok olduğu kalabalık broyler kümesleri için tehlike arz ederler (3). Eimeria türleri yem dönüşüm oranlarının artışı, kilo alımının azalması, verim düşüklüğü, reprodüktif performans kaybı, sürekli ookist saçılımı ve sekonder bakteriyel enfeksiyonlara karşı duyarlılık artışı ile kendini gösteren morbiditeyle seyreder. Enfeksiyon tüm evcil ve yabani kanatlı hayvan türlerini etkilemekte ve hayvanlarda başlıca depresyon, iştahsızlık, kanlı veya kansız diyare ve ciddi vakalarda ise ölüme yol açmaktadır (4). Koksidiyoz dünya genelinde kanatlı hayvan endüstrisinin en önemli paraziter hastalığı olup, klinik veya subklinik enfeksiyonların tedavisi ve kontrolüne yönelik yapılan uygulamalar ciddi ekonomik kayıplara neden olmaktadır (5, 6). Kanatlı hayvanlarda koksidiyoza sebep olan patojen Eimeria türleri E. acervulina, E. tenella, E. brunetti, E. maxima, E. mitis, E. necatrix ve E. praecox'tur. Bunlar içerisinde sekal koksidiyoza sebep olan başlıca tür E. tenella'dır (7). Sekal koksidiyoz olguları birçok yerde olduğu gibi (8-11), Türkiye'de de (12, 13) kanatlı hayvanlarda bildirilmiştir.
