Incidence of Buxtonella sulcata in bovines in R.S. Pura, Jammu

Abstract: Incidence of Buxtonella sulcata was recorded as 20.9 % in bovines (n = 374) of R.S. Pura, Jammu with cattle showing higher infection rate (23.6 %) than the buffaloes (18.5 %). The infection was significantly (p < 0.0001) higher in young animals (33.1 %) than the adults (13.9 %). Animals with diarrhoeic faeces had a significantly higher (p < 0.0001) infection rate (38.5 %) than the animals with normal faeces (9.9 %), suggesting the influence of protozoan on the incidence of diarrhoeal symptoms in bovines.

“…For example, a cyst of B. sulcata measuring 61.324 × 60.97 µm ( Figure 4 A) is compatible with a cyst of B. sulcata , which is oval-shaped or round-shaped, yellowish green in color and measuring 54.8–96.2 μm in diameter, with a mean of 67.3 ± 11.1 μm. A double-layered capsule that displays a macronucleus and contractile vacuoles surrounds these cysts (60–68.6 × 60–68.8 µm) [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…In this study B. coli was present in horses (4.17%), T. ornatus (1.7%), and Cattle (0.89%). Higher infection rates have been reported in cattle (9.9–23.6–38.5%), suggesting the influence of protozoan diarrheal symptoms in bovines [ 22 ]. In Egypt, studies conveyed a prevalence of 32.86% [ 54 ], 27.7% in Uruguay [ 55 ], and 0.32% in Camelus dromedarius [ 54 ] and 6.25% in Cattle from Colombia [ 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”

“…Increased number of this protozoan parasite in alimentary canal of the infected animal may result in diarrhoea and poor condition of the animal (Kumar et al, 2017). The main clinical sign of Buxtonella sulcata infection in bovines is debilitating diarrhoea that sometimes may cause death in the untreated animals (Ganai et al, 2015). The current study was conducted to evaluate the clinical signs, diagnosis and successful therapeutic management of Buxtonella sulcata infection in 26 Surti buffalo calves.…”
