Incidence of and defoliation by a newly introduced pest, Paropsisterna variicollis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), on eleven durable Eucalyptus species in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand

Abstract: In March 2016, an incursion of the paropsine beetle Paropsisterna variicollis (eucalyptus variegated beetle) was detected in the Hawke's Bay during routine Forest Biosecurity Surveillance. Paropsines cause significant damage to eucalypt plantations in several parts of the world. A survey of three Hawke's Bay sites containing 11 durable eucalypt species was conducted in January 2017. Defoliation by paropsines, and numbers of eggs, larvae and adults were recorded. Adult Pst. variicollis were observed on all euca… Show more

“…When the species established in New Zealand, it was incorrectly first referred to as Pst. variicollis (Lin et al 2017). Peixoto et al (2018) recommended a taxonomic revision and following Dr Chris Reid morphologically examining museum specimens from Australia, England, and New Zealand, Leschen et al (2020) concluded that Pst.…”

“…Paropsisterna cloelia (Stål) (Paropsisterna henceforth abbreviated to Pst.) was first detected in 2016 in the Hawke's Bay(Lin et al 2017;Rogan 2016). Most recently, a third species of Trachymela, which is awaiting identification, was detected in June 2021 in Nelson (Ministry for Primary Industries 2021); however, its impacts are uncertain at this time (B. Rogan, personal communication 1 ).…”

“…In a trend similar to other countries (Wingfield et al, 2008) but exacerbated by New Zealand's close geographic proximity to Australia, numerous Eucalyptus pests have successfully invaded, including Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) beetles (Withers, 2001). Of these, five are paropsines on Eucalyptus: Paropsis charybdis Stål (first found in 1916), Trachymela sloanei (Blackburn) (first found in 1976), Trachymela catenata (Chapuis) (found in 1992), Paropsisterna beata (Newman) (found in 2012) (Yamoah et al, 2016), and Paropsisterna variicollis (Chapuis) (found 2016) (Lin et al, 2017). Of all the eucalypt insect pest species, P. charybdis has been the most damaging to date, defoliating numerous species of valued Symphyomyrtus eucalypts.…”
