Incidence and Trends of Basal Cell Carcinoma and Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Objective To determine population-based incidence estimates of BCC and cSCC. Patients and Methods We reviewed the medical records of a population-based cohort diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancer between January 2, 2000 and December 31, 2010. Sex- and age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated and compared to estimates from previous periods. Results The age-adjusted BCC incidence per 100,000 persons was 360.0 (95% CI, 342.5–377.4) for men and 292.9 (95% CI, 278.6–307.1) for women. The age-adjusted cSCC… Show more

“…Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is one of the most common malignancies in the Caucasian population. 1 Its incidence has tripled during the past decades despite continued efforts to implement primary prevention strategies. 2 Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light has been identified as major contributor for the development of NMSC and particularly for keratinocyte skin cancers.…”

“…We found some differences in the patient characteristics of both groups, which are intrinsic to the epidemiology of the type of tumor: patients with SCC are older than patients with BCC (mean age of debut 70 years vs. 63 years); SCC is more frequent in male than in female patients; and SCC is more frequent in immunosuppressed patients. 12,[19][20][21][22] In our study, patients in the SCC group had larger and faster growing tumors, and more tumors had previously been treated with surgery or radiotherapy. We have found very few studies analyzing these facts.…”

“…These data are consistent with our study. “…The incidence rate of cSCC continues to increase worldwide. In the United States of America, it had increased by 263% from 2000 to 2010, and has now become a substantial economic burden (3).…”
