Incidence and survival of laryngeal cancer in Denmark: a nation-wide study from 1980 to 2014

Abstract: Background: The purpose of this registry study was to evaluate trends in incidence and survival of laryngeal cancer in the Danish population from 1980 to 2014. Methods: This study includes all patients with laryngeal cancer registered in the Danish Cancer Registry (DCR) in the period 1980-2014. The age-adjusted incidence rate (AAIR) per 100,000 and average annual percent change (AAPC) were calculated. We evaluated the relative survival at five years in relation to gender, anatomical location, year at diagnosis… Show more

“…Concurrent chemoradiation has become the dominant treatment for advanced laryngeal cancer because of its higher rates of organ preservation compared to radiation therapy (RT) alone or induction chemotherapy followed by RT (5,6). Despite the increasing use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy combinations in the majority of patients with advanced cancer, no improvement in overall survival has been found (5,7,8). Total laryngectomy is used to treat locally recurrent disease after chemoradiotherapy, especially for older or frail patients (6,9).…”

“…Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of head and neck cancer with a global incidence of over 170 000 patients per year, resulting in almost 95 000 deaths in 2018 1 . Despite recent advances in treatment the 5‐year overall survival has not changed significantly over the past 20 years 2‐5 …”
