Incidence and Severity of Short-Term Complications After Breast Augmentation

Abstract: The frequency and severity of local complications remain the primary safety issues with silicone breast implants. The Danish Registry for Plastic Surgery of the Breast (DPB), established in 1999, prospectively collects pre-, peri- and postoperative information regarding Danish women undergoing breast augmentation.

“…Each incision site, implant placement area or features of implant have some advantages and disadvantages, so selection of the surgical approach should be made according to each patient's individual characteristics to obtain best results. Most occuring complications after the breast augmentation including hematoma, infection, seroma, capsular contracture, malposition and rupture of the implant, rippling, ptosis and asymmetry have been reported in detail [1][2][3]. In some surgical techniques, occurrence rates of the complications have been claimed to be more common than the another approaches.…”

“…Capsular contraction has been reported to be the most common complication following primary aesthetic breast augmentation (3)(4)(5). Capsular contraction most commonly occurs within the first year postoperatively (6). There is a cumulative risk for developing capsular fibrosis, which increases with time after implant placement (6,7).…”

There is a cumulative risk for developing capsular fibrosis, which increases with time after implant placement (6,7). Certain risk factors, such as infections, hematoma, seroma, and the composition and texture of the implants, have been implicated in the development and degree of capsular fibrosis (1, [8][9][10].…”
