Incidence and predictability of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism

Abstract: Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was high in elderly patients treated with amiodarone. Cases of AIT and AIH occurred in patients with and without preexisting thyroid disorders. Because of the high incidence of amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction, regular testing of thyroid function is mandatory during and following amiodarone treatment.

“…3,4 The proportions of patients with amiodarone-induced dysfunction of the thyroid have been estimated at 0.6%-20.8% (thyrotoxicosis) and 3.3%-25.8% (hypothyroidism). [5][6][7][8] However, the incidence of thyroid dysfunction has not been estimated previously in a large-scale, population-based cohort.…”

“…100% of those with high score were confi rmed, thus, for this group of patients the Newcastle index has been reliable, but in case of medium scores (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19), the Newcastle index has proved to be irrelevant in the present study (22% had confi rmed hyperthyroidism). A smaller incidence of amiodarone induced hyperthyroidism of only 3% has been noted in a study conducted by Hoff man et al in 2008 [12]. While the male:female ratio in the aforementioned study was 3:1, in our study it was 1:3.…”
