Incidence and natural history of challenge‐proven cow's milk allergy in European children – EuroPrevall birth cohort

Abstract: This unique pan-European birth cohort study using the gold standard diagnostic procedure for food allergies confirmed challenge-proven CMA in <1% of children up to age 2. Affected infants without detectable specific antibodies to cow's milk were very likely to tolerate cow's milk one year after diagnosis, whereas only half of those with specific antibodies in serum 'outgrew' their disease so soon.

“…A wide range of CMA resolution rates has been reported from studies examining the natural history of CMA in different countries (6,9,13). In 9 European countries, 69% of children with CMA tolerated cow's milk one year after diagnosis, and all children with non IgE-mediated CMA and 57% of those with IgE-mediated CMA did so (14). A large cohort of 512 infants and children with CMA ranging from 3 to 15 months of age at 5 areas of the USA demonstrated a resolution rate of about 50% by age 5 (15).…”

“…They indicate that the incidence of IgE-mediated CMA is less than anticipated: 0.41% (54 infants over 13 019) in Israel [5] and 0.46% (55 over 12,049) in the European community [6]. It was contended that too strict definitions may underestimate the incidence of CMA [7].…”

“…It was contended that too strict definitions may underestimate the incidence of CMA [7]. In any case, the condition presents an early resolution in the majority of cases, in particular the non-IgEmediated forms [5,6,8] 3. Non-IgE-mediated CMA and its gastrointestinal manifestations CMA is a spectrum of conditions ranging from the immediate.…”
