Incidence and Epidemiology of Anal Cancer in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study

Abstract: Objective To examine the incidence and risk factors for anal cancer in a multicenter cohort of HIV-positive and negative men who have sex with men followed between 1984 and 2006 (MACS). Methods Prospective analysis using Poisson regression and Cox proportional hazard models, and a nested case-control study using conditional logistic regression. Results There were 28 cases of anal cancer among the 6,972 men who were evaluated. The incidence rate was significantly higher in HIV-positive men than in HIV-negat… Show more

“…Before the HIV pandemic, the incidence of anal cancer in MSM 8 was approximately 35 per 100,000-a rate similar to that of cervical cancer before the initiation of Pap test screening. In HIV-positive MSM, the reported incidence rates range from 42 to 137 per 100,000 per year 2,[9][10][11][12] and are continuing to increase even with the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) therapy. 2,12 In the population of MSM, both HIV-positive and negative men, prevalence rates of biopsy-proven highgrade AIN-the precursor lesion-are also remarkably high: approximately 50% in HIV-positive MSM and 25% in HIV-negative MSM have biopsy-proven highgrade AIN.…”

“…14 Diseases associated with HPV are even more frequent in HIV positive MSM population. 10,12,15 In Canada and in the province of Quebec, the percentage of MSM is estimated to be about 5%. [16][17][18] Among those living in Quebec, 18.3% have had anogenital warts sometime in their lives.…”
