Incidence and Determinants of IgE-mediated Sensitization in Apprentices

Abstract: We investigated prospectively the incidence and determinants of work-related specific skin sensitization in a cohort of 769 apprentices, including 417 in animal health technology, 230 in pastry-making, and 122 in dental-hygiene technology. Subjects were recruited when starting exposure to laboratory animals, flour, or latex. A questionnaire and skin-prick tests with common and work-related allergens were administered on entry and at follow-up visits from 8 to 44 mo; information on number of hours of exposure t… Show more

“…In a pooled survey of 649 workers from four countries who were exposed to laboratory animals, 18/401 (4.5%) nonatopic subjects had skin reactivity to rat urine [7]. Among the 85 incident cases of sensitization to a laboratory-animal-derived allergen identified in the present authors9 previous study, 18 (21%) had entirely negative skin tests to common allergens [3].…”

“…A positive reaction was defined as a weal ¢3 mm in the absence of reaction to the diluent and in the presence of a positive reaction to histamine phosphate. Contrary to a previous publication by the present authors in which atopy was defined as at least two positive reactions to the common inhalants [3], in the present study atopy was defined as one positive reaction in order to have no occurrence in nonatopic subjects at baseline in the case of skin reactions to mites.…”

“…It has been suggested that workers may develop allergies more easily to some animals than to others 12 and that the potential for sensitisation is related to the nature of the animal allergen. 6 This study describes the relations between exposures to a variety of laboratory animals and the development of LAA and LAA symptoms in a dynamic cohort of workers over a 12 year period. We examined relations between different indices of exposure and the incidence of LAA, using annual self-reported exposure information about job titles, hours worked with specific animals, and hours spent at different tasks.…”
