Incidence and Course of Low Back Pain Episodes in the General Population

Abstract: Most new and recurrent LBP episodes are mild. Less than one third of cases resolve annually, and more than 20% recur within 6 months. LBP episodes are more recurrent and persistent in older adults.

“…A recent review infers the prevalence of LBP to be highest in middle-aged adults and in women [4]. Another report suggests that LBP is more frequent and with longer episodes in old than in young adults [5]. Since both the number and proportion of individuals older than 65 years are increasing in most western populations [6] it seems reasonable to assume that LBP will result in an even greater health care burden in the future [7].…”

“…This group is described as consisting of individual muscles, including the semispinalis, multifidus, and rotatores. The paravertebral muscles and vertebral column receive significant scientific attention in clinical medicine, because of the prominence of back pain and spinal pathologies in humans (Boal and Gillette, 2004;Cassidy et al, 2005;Balague et al, 2007); however, our morphological understanding of these muscles is poor.Slijper (1946) studied the structure of paravertebral muscles in a wide range of large mammalian species, including the dugong (Dugong dugon) and armadillo (Dasypus). This muscle group has also been described in…”

“…In the US, back pain causes an average loss of 5.3 work-hours per week [26]. Every year in the general population, 4 out of every 1,000 individuals become disabled because of back pain [5]. Despite new disability management and clinical interventions designed to shorten work absences, reducing work disability associated with back pain remains an elusive goal.…”

“…Recent research shows that the course of back pain is episodic and that a substantial minority of patients does not experience resolution of their pain and disability [5,8,12,13,21,31,32,37]. A recent review of the literature shows that the rate of recurrence of work disability related to back pain depends on the definition used to measure recurrence and on the study population.…”
