Abstract: ObjectivesTo examine the incidence rate and characteristics of paediatric abusive head trauma (PAHT) among children under age 5 years in Taiwan.MethodsThe International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) was used to identify broad and narrow definitions of children aged under 5 years with PAHT from 2006 to 2015 in Taiwan using a representative national insurance research database. Medical resource utilisation was also analysed. Incidence rates per 100 000 person-years … Show more

“…Overall, 10 articles focused on AHT, with children’s ages all under five years (age range: 0.2 months - 4 years). Most of the studies (n = 7) estimated the incidence rate of AHT (Chang et al, 2020; Emrick et al, 2019; Fujiwara et al, 2012; Parks, Kegler, et al, 2012; Parks, Sugerman, et al, 2012; Shanahan et al, 2013; Yamaoka et al, 2020), two studies compared the demographic characteristics or health care utilization between victims of AHT and other children (Bailhache et al, 2020; Ettaro et al, 2004), two focused on describing the characteristics of children with AHT (Chang et al, 2020; Yamaoka et al, 2020), and one assessed the sensitivity and specificity of AHT coding recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Berger et al, 2015). Among the 10 articles, seven (Bailhache et al, 2020; Berger et al, 2015; Chang et al, 2020; Fujiwara et al, 2012; Parks, Kegler, et al, 2012; Parks, Sugerman, et al, 2012; Shanahan et al, 2013) used the definition and codes for AHT recommended by CDC (Parks, Annest, et al, 2012; excluded from our review because it is not a peer-reviewed article).…”

“…23 Using these definitions, the incidence rate of AHT was estimated as 33.4 (31.4-35.4) 24 in the USA as well as 18.7 per 100 000 children < 1 year old in Taiwan. 25 We also reported AHT incidence among Japanese samples (7.2 [7.18-7.26] for presumptive ] for probable AHT) by utilizing ICD-10 codes. 15 However, there was a limitation to the use of ICD diagnoses for obtaining presumptive AHT cases.…”

“…As another method to assess incidence rate, ICD‐9/10 codes in discharge records are also utilized based on the definitions developed by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 23 . Using these definitions, the incidence rate of AHT was estimated as 33.4 (31.4–35.4) 24 in the USA as well as 18.7 per 100 000 children < 1 year old in Taiwan 25 . We also reported AHT incidence among Japanese samples (7.2 [7.18–7.26] for presumptive AHT and 41.7 [41.7–41.8] for probable AHT) by utilizing ICD‐10 codes 15 .…”

“…More than two-thirds of AHT survivors experienced at least one neurodevelopmental disability (Jackson et al, 2021; Manfield et al, 2021; Nuño et al, 2018). Infants and young children, the main victims of AHT (Chang et al, 2021; Nuño et al, 2020), cannot protect themselves due to developmental immaturity. Therefore, prevention interventions are designed and targeted to reduce parental risk factors and improve parental knowledge and parenting skills.…”
