Incidence and anatomical variability of accessory and sesamoid bones of the foot

Abstract: We aimed to assess the incidence, mean size, patterns, and types of accessory and sesamoid bones of the foot using computed tomography. Material and Methods: A total of 814 non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography images of the foot obtained from 717 patients between October 2015 and January 2018 were investigated retrospectively. Images acquired in the original axial plane were used to perform multiplanar reconstruction in the coronal or sagittal planes. Incidence, mean size, patterns, and types of accessory… Show more

“…In our study type I ANB had the smallest average size of 0.54 cm (0.24 cm); type IIA was 0.87 cm (0.32 cm); type IIB was 1.20 cm (0.25 cm); and type III had the largest average size of 1.95 cm (0.36 cm). Another study by Arslan et al 13 noted the size range from 814 foot x-rays were as follows: type I (0.09-0.97 cm), type II (0.26–1.3 cm), and type III (0.5–2.28 cm); these measurements were similar to those in our study.…”

“…In multipartite bones such as bipartite and tripartite bones, each bone was measured separately. 13 Classification of multipartite bones were based on the largest bone. The following information was recorded for each ANB: site (left, right, or bilateral), size (highest axial measurements), classification (Type I, IIA, IIB, III), subtypes (a, b, c), and whether they were symptomatic.…”

“…Os naviculare accessoria, also called os tibiale externum, is the third most common accessory ossicle in our study. Its reported prevalence varies between 4 and 34% (23,24). Although it was found bilaterally in 3 patients in our study, it may be bilateral up to 50% according to some studies (5).…”

“…However, a high incidence of accessory ossicles was also reported in a healthy asymptomatic population. In a recent Korean population study, accessory ossicles were found in 49.2% of the healthy, asymptomatic Korean adults [10]. Additionally, in a CT-based study, accessory bones were detected in 47.5% of the scans.…”
