Inbred mouse strains vary in oral self-selection of nicotine

Abstract: Inbred mouse strains differ in sensitivity to a first dose of nicotine and in the development of tolerance to nicotine. The experiments reported here used six inbred mouse strains (A, BUB, C3H, C57BL/6, DBA/2, ST/b) that differ in sensitivity to an acute challenge dose of nicotine to determine whether differences in oral self-selection of nicotine exist. Animals were presented with solutions containing nicotine or vehicle (water or 0.2% saccharin) and their daily intake of the two fluids was measured for 4 day… Show more

“…C57BL/6Ibg mice exhibited greater oral nicotine self-administration than DBA/2Ibg, ST/bJ, BUB/J, A/Ibg, and C3H/2Ibg mice [140]. Furthermore, C57BL/6J mice developed nicotine CPP, whereas DBA/2J mice did not [60].…”

“…As a consequence, the preference for the drug solution and its taste did not vanish. A broader range of nicotine concentrations should perhaps have been studied, since apparent drug peculiarities could also be dosespecific (Smith and Roberts 1995;Meliska et al 1995;Robinson et al 1996).…”

“…To obtain the faded-out solutions, the initial solution was diluted with tap water. Nicotine concentrations were selected on the basis of literature data (Meliska et al 1995;Robinson et al 1996;Adriani et al 2002). …”
