In vivo pentamodal tomographic imaging for small animals

Abstract: Multimodality molecular imaging emerges as a powerful strategy for correlating multimodal information. We developed a pentamodal imaging system which can perform positron emission tomography, bioluminescence tomography, fluorescence molecular tomography, Cerenkov luminescence tomography and X-ray computed tomography successively. Performance of sub-systems corresponding to different modalities were characterized. In vivo multimodal imaging of an orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma xenograft mouse model was per… Show more

“…Previous studies have proven that radiopharmaceuticals emitting β + , β − and even α particles are capable to perform CLI, which significantly expands the type of probes for molecular imaging . By combining the advantages of both nuclear imaging and optical imaging, CLI owns the merits of high sensitivity, great imaging resolution and promising potential for clinical translation . So far, the outstanding performance of CLI has been demonstrated in the areas of tumor diagnosis, photodynamic therapy, treatment evaluation, and so on .…”

“…30,34 More recently, tri-modality 35 and even pentamodality, tomographic imaging systems were also investigated. 36 One of major challenges in the multimodality FMT system is how to utilize anatomical information properly and easily in the FMT reconstruction. Soft prior method is a widely accepted approach, which allows variations within the regions.…”

“…However, reconstructing the source distribution is extremely challenging because of how ill‐posed and ill‐conditioned the inverse problem is. In the last decade, extensive efforts have been made to develop image reconstruction algorithms for BLT, and many algorithms have been proposed, including using high‐order light propagation models , designing an effective regularization term , integrating a priori information provided by structural/functional imaging modalities or using multispectral measurements .…”

“…However, the assumption of a homogeneous optical property background can lead to inaccurate source localization in the reconstructed images when the tissues of mouse are heterogeneous . To overcome this, a promising alternative strategy is to incorporate structural information provided by computed tomography/magnetic resonance image (CT/MRI) images into the BLT reconstruction . The structural images can be segmented into several different regions.…”
