In Vivo Magnetic Resonance Thermometry for Brain and Body Temperature Variations in Canines under General Anesthesia

Abstract: The core body temperature tends to decrease under general anesthesia. Consequently, monitoring the core body temperature during procedures involving general anesthesia is essential to ensure patient safety. In veterinary medicine, rectal temperature is used as an indicator of the core body temperature, owing to the accuracy and convenience of this approach. Some previous studies involving craniotomy reported differences between the brain and core temperatures under general anesthesia. However, noninvasive imag… Show more

“…A possible reason is that anesthesia reduces the metabolic rate and associated brain heat production [21]. In a very recent in vivo magnetic resonance thermometry observation, brain (white matter) temperature of canines is decreased more than threefold (4.8 ºC vs 1.4 ºC) than rectal temperature [22].…”

“…Hence, the mapping of temperature in tissues is a key aspect of nanomedicine. Typical tools for in vivo temperature imaging are MRI thermometry [300,301]-potentially using temperature-sensitive magnetization of a nanomaterial contrast agent [302]-, and photo-acoustic mapping [303]. Moreover, diagnostic methods heavily rely on thermal imaging as the onset of many diseases, e.g., inflammation, cancer, and cardiac abnormalities, is characterized by thermal singularities.…”
