The short term effects of waterborne cadmium (Cd(+2)) on the levels of serum parameters related to bone metabolism including calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphorus (P(i)) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in common carp fish (Cyprinus carpio L.) were studied. Fish were treated with varying concentrations of Cd(+2) (0.22, 1.1 and 2.2 mg l(-1)) daily for 14 days. The results obtained show that serum P(i) and ALP concentrations were elevated by increasing Cd(+2) concentration in water containing fish whereas serum Ca level was decreased. At the same time, the protective role of waterborne zinc (Zn(+2), 1 mg l(-1)) on the same parameters was also investigated. Results showing that daily treatment of fish with Zn(+2), increased the concentrations of Ca and ALP in serum by 2.07 and 1.86 fold and decreased serum P(i) level by 57.7% in comparison with Cd(+2) treatment. The combination of Cd(+2) and Zn(+2) on the same parameters was studied next. There was a significant (P < 0.05) elevation in serum Ca and ALP levels in comparison with Cd(+2) treatment. Decreasing in serum P(i) level was not significant in comparison with Cd(+2) treatments. The protective effect of Zn(+2) on Cd(+2) disturbances in serum parameters related to bone metabolism in this manuscript has been also discussed.

Chemicals present in the environment tend to alter the physiology of flora and fauna. Heavy metals tend to accumulate in the biosphere by virtue of their non-biodegradable nature. It is known that accumulation of heavy metals in tissues and organs results in cellular and molecular damage in various species (Cestari et al., 2004;Flora et al., 2012). The present study demonstrates the morphological and biochemical effects associated with the accumulation of the heavy metal lead in adult fish, Cirrhina mrigala (Common Indian Carp). Adults of Cirrhina mrigala were exposed to increasing concentrations of lead nitrate for a span of 96 hours, post which anatomical and biochemical changes were monitored. External morphology of adult fish and that of the liver and intestine were also qualitatively examined. The liver of treated fish appeared enlarged and had more mass compared with the control, whereas the intestine showed discolouration indicating ingestion of lead. Enzymes indicating stress and cellular damage were assayed in liver extracts prepared from exposed fish. The enzymes studied were succinate dehydrogenase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase. A significant increase was foundin the activity of all of the enzymes except succinate dehydrogenase probably indicating hepatotoxicity. Succinate dehydrogenase activity was seen to have decreased, possibly indicating oxidative stress. Analysis of the neural marker enzyme acetylcholinesterase in brain extracts from these fish also showed a significant decrease in its activity which could lead to a misregulation in neurotransmission. Abstract. The lethal concentration of cadmium was determined for the mysid Leptomysis lingvura G.O. Sars, a Mediterranean species from surface coastal waters, and the effect of sublethal doses on respiration, ammonia excretion, and feeding efficiency at different temperatures, and on activities of 19 hydrolases was tested. Experiments were carried out on individuals collected in spring 1987 near Marseille. At 18 °C, respiration rate was significantly affected only by concentrations > 0.05 mg Cd 1-1. At 0.1 mg Cd 1-1, respiration rate was more significantly depressed at 20 °C than at 10 °C. There was a concomitant decrease in the Qlo rate (by 23 to 59%, according to the particular experiment), indicating a strong synergistic effect of temperature. Ammonia excretion was likewise affected by cadmium, also with a concomitant decrease in the Qlo rate (by 34%). Daily faecal pellet production was maximum at 18 °C; it was inhibited by cadmium at temperatures between 14 and 20 °C, and enhanced at extreme temperatures (10 and 22 °C). The assimilation efficiency of contaminated individuals was reduced by 9%. These decreases in faecal pellet production and assimilation efficiency reflect a significant decrease in energy (by about 43%) which could rapidly lead to an unbalanced energy budget with a consecutive lowering of the reproductive potential. Generally, hydrolase activities usually increased initially in the presence of 0.2rag Cd1-1, but after 48 h they declined, reaching very low values at 72 h. Most physiological processes are therefore affected by exposure to cadmium and the unbalanced energy budget arises from the inability to utilize environmental food. These results are consistent with the literature data on cadmium contamination in marine organisms. Physiological and biochemical changes appear to be very informative in studies of in vitro sublethal effects ofmicropollutants and in situ environmental modifications.
