In vivo effect of essential oil of Mentha x villosa and its active compound against Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon, 1907)

Abstract: Schistosomiasis treatment is dependent on a single drug, praziquantel (PZQ). The development of resistance of PZQ has drawn the attention of many researchers to alternative drugs. One viable and promising treatment is the study of medicinal plants as a new approach to the experimental treatment for Schistosomiasis. The present work aimed to evaluate in vivo antischistosomal activity of effect of Mentha x villosa Oil Essential (Mv-EO) and rotundifolone (ROT) against Schistosoma mansoni. Thirty-day-old female Sw… Show more

“…22 Doses of 200 mg/kg Yerba buena essential oil and rotundifolone (141.9 mg/Kg) resulted in a significant reduction in fluke burden (72.44% and 74.48%, respectively). 29 The study also showed a reduction in liver, intestinal, and fecal egg count and a change in oogram pattern of the mice treated with yerba buena-essential oil and rotundifolone compared to infected, untreated mice.…”

“…Treatment with essential oil from fresh Melaleuca armillaris leaves (main constituents: 1,8-cineol-33.93%, terpinen-4-ol-18.79%, limonene-10, 37%, and B-pinene-6.59%) administered in mice twice a week for six weeks (150 mg/kg, orally), from the second week post-infection, significantly improved levels of glutathione and malondialdehyde and raised levels of vitamins C and E [88]. Matos-Rocha, 2020, [61] treated infected mice with Mentha × villosa essential oil (200 mg/kg) and rotundifolone (141.9 mg/kg) for five consecutive days, observing respective reductions of 72.44% and 74.48% in recovered S. mansoni after treatment.…”

“…One of such studies showed that mice infected with 80 cercariae and orally treated with the EO from Mentha × villosa at dose 200 mg kg À 1 and its main compound, rotundifolone, at a dose of 141.9 mg kg À 1 , 45 days post-infection for five consecutive days have significantly reduced worm burden (72.44 % and 74.48 %, respectively) and the number of eggs obtained from liver, intestinal and fecal samples. [33] The EO from Melaleuca armillaris, orally administrated at 150 mg kg À 1 for two successive days eight weeks post-infection, improves the disturbing levels of GSH (glutathione) and MDA (malondialdehyde) in infected mice. In addition, the levels of vitamins C and E increase and the liver and body weights in infected mice are improved as compared to the infected-untreated group.…”
