“…At an average followup interval of 10 years, we found an 82% reduction in linear wear rates (0.04 versus 0.22 mm/year), a lower incidence of osteolysis, and improved survivorship among the XLPE liners [16]. Because the XLPE liners used in our study did not incorporate antioxidants, there are concerns that the wear performance of these components and other firstgeneration crosslinked liners may deteriorate over time as a result of in vivo oxidation or cyclic loading [10,32,37]. Because these types of components have been implanted in hundreds of thousands of patients undergoing THA, evaluating the clinical performance of XLPE liners at 15-year followup in the context of a prospective, randomized study is the best way to address contemporary concerns and provide data so clinicians and their patients can make evidencebased decisions.…”

“…As already mentioned, crosslinked/remelted polyethylenes did not contain free radicals at the time of implantation and were expected to be stable to oxidation. Unexpectedly, some recent literature studies reported that measurable levels of oxidation were observed in some retrievals [ 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 ]. Two concurrent causes have been tentatively identified to explain such a surprising phenomenon.…”

“…Despite the dynamic development in the field of materials engineering, it was not possible to develop an artificial friction node that would be universal and sufficiently failure-free to be implanted in all patients. Research is constantly being carried out on the introduction of modern materials for the components of artificial joints and the improvement of the lifetime of endoprostheses, with particular emphasis on the friction node [6,7]. The second main current of engineering research is the analysis of the state of stresses and strains in the elements of artificial joints and their impact on tissues [8,9].…”
