In vivo characterization of the interface between cortical bone and biphasic calcium phosphate by the PIXE method

Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the resorption of a calcium phosphate ceramic composed of 75% hydroxyapatite and 25% β‐tricalcium phosphate (HTCP) used as a biomaterial. The animal implantation has been made in the cortical femur of sheep. Delays of 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 28, 36 and 48 weeks between graft and analysis were used. The samples were a section of cortical bone containing the implant. The mechanism of bioceramic degradation was studied by the particle‐induced x‐ray emission (PIXE) method. The bon… Show more

“…Examination of bone and osseointegration around an implant are frequently realized with techniques such as histological observation, histomorphometry, fluorescent microscopy and scanning electron microscopy [24][25][26][27]. RBS and PIXE analysis are complementary techniques for analysis of the implant-bone interface [28][29][30][31]. The advantages of PIXE analysis are the ability to make multiple-elemental maps with a good spatial resolution (in the order of lm) and to detect various trace elements simultaneously with good sensitivity [32].…”
