This article presents an overview of rheoencephalography (REG) -electrical impedance measurements of the brain -and summarizes past and ongoing research to develop medical applications of REG for neuro-critical care and for primary prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease. The availability of advanced electronics and computation has opened up the potential for use of REG technology as a noninvasive, continuous and inexpensive brain monitor for military and civilian applications. The clinical background information presented here introduces physiological and clinical environments where REG has potential for use in research and clinical settings.REG studies over the past three decades have involved in vitro and in vivo groups (animal and human), including more than 1500 measurements and related electronic and computational results and practical applications. In vitro studies helped researchers understand the flow/volume relationship between Doppler ultrasound and electrical impedance signals and supported development of REG data processing methods. In animal studies, REG was used to monitor the lower limit of cerebral blood flow (CBF) autoregulation (AR) using a newly developed algorithm. These animal studies also confirmed correlations between REG and measurements of carotid flow (CF) and intracranial pressure (ICP). Human studies confirmed the applicability of REG for detecting cerebrovascular alteration, demonstrating the usefulness of REG in the field of stroke/cardio-vascular disease prevention. In these studies, REG was compared to known stroke risk factors and to results obtained using carotid ultrasound measurements. An intelligent REG system (Cerberus) has been developed for primary stroke prevention. In these studies, the biologically relevant variables of the REG signal were pulse amplitude (minimummaximum distance) and duration of the anacrotic (rising) portion of the REG pulse wave.The principal limitation of REG for clinical application is the lack of pathological and physiological correlations. The studies presented here have initiated such inquiries, but many clinical questions about the pathophysiological background of REG remain unanswered.These results demonstrate that REG development is a multidisciplinary subject with relevance for medicine (vascular neurology and neurosurgery intensive care); electronic engineering; mathematics, and computer science (data processing). It is hoped that information presented in this article will provide assistance to those involved in REG research, particularly in development and clinical applications.

The article describes and analyzes regression models of individual indicators of cerebral circulation in practically healthy women of the endo-mesomorphic somatotype, depending on the features of anthropo-somatotypological indicators. Constructed all 5 possible time indices of rheoencephalogram with determination coefficient (R2) from 0.593 to 0.904; of the 5 possible amplitude indices of the rheoencephalogram, 3 of R2 from 0.540 to 720 were constructed; of the 8 possible derivatives of the rheoencephalogram, 7 with R2 from 0.528 to 0.865 were constructed. Constructed models with R2 more than 0.5 most often include: for amplitude rheoencephalogram indicators -body diameters (29,4%), cephalometric indices and thickness of skin and fat folds (by 23,5%); for the time indices of the rheoencephalogram -the thickness of skin and fat folds (35.7%), cephalometric indices (21.4%), longitudinal, circumferential dimensions and diameters of the body (by 10.7%); for derivative indices of the rheoencephalogram -the thickness of skin and fat folds (29.3%), the circumferential size of the body and the width of distal epiphyses of long limb bones (by 17.1%) and body diameters (14.6%).Key words: practically healthy women, endo-mesomorphic somatotype, cerebral hemodynamics, anthropometric indices, regression models.Problems of timely diagnosis of cerebrovascular disorder in young people attach great importance to health care institutions concerned about the "rejuvenation" of cerebrovascular pathology and institutions involved in the problem of age and pathological physiology [18,19]. Relations between blood supply of brain of students and condition of autonomic nervous system and risk factors

The purpose of our research was to estimate the brain blood supply level by rheoencephalography method in junior students of the Medical academy and to determine the blood supply links with the autonomic regulation state, behavioural and alimentary factors. Rheo-encephalographic study, research of the autonomic nervous system state, heart rate regulation and questioning of 17–29 year-old students have been conducted. Basic hemodynamic indices were normal in all surveyed students. Increase in body weight index enhanced the probability of the brain blood supply deterioration. Adaptation mechanisms tension was accompanied by reduction of the rheographic index. Higher blood filling of the brain vessels corersponded to higher ratio “blood minute volume / due blood minute volume” defined taking into account the system arterial pressure. The quantity of links with indicators of the autonomic nervous system state was limited. Nonlinear dependence of the rheographic index on the Kerdo vegetative index was observed: the rheographic index value was the lowest in students with the autonomic balance by the Kerdo vegetative index; it was the highest in the group with the sympathetic prevalence. Risk factor of blood filling decrease was the reduction in the diet variety when foodstuffs of different groups were included into the diet less than twice a week, or they were excluded from the diet completely. Positive correlation of blood supply was observed more often with frequent consumption of fish, vegetables, and fresh fruits. Increase in the regular alcohol intake experience promoted decrease in brain blood supply and increase in asymmetries of blood supply indicators. The effect of alcohol was essential, despite young age of surveyed students and low level of alcohol consumption. Increase in the experience and intensity of smoking was accompanied by deterioration of brain blood supply indicators. Students with the best blood supply had the better academic progress. Observed multiple correlations of blood supply indicators with behavioural factors allowed to assert that reduction of risk factors (control of body weight, variety and full value of a diet, refusal of smoking, alcohol restriction even below doses which are considered safe) would allow to improve the brain blood supply.
