In Vivo and in Vitro Toxicity of Fractionated Fish Lipids, with Particular Regard to their Content of Chlorinated Organic Compounds

Abstract: Six different lipid matrices (the intact lipid (IL), four lipid fractions with different polarity, and the free fatty acids (FFAs) obtained by hydrolysis of the triacylglycerol (TAG) containing fraction) were obtained from salmon (Salmo salar) and eel (Anguilla anguilla), each collected at a contaminated and a comparatively uncontaminated catch site along the coast of Scandinavia. The lipid matrices were studied in toxicological test systems representing various biological functions of different organ systems … Show more

“…Fish primary hepatocyte cultures have been used to detect P4501 A1-inducing compounds in organic fractions extracted from pulp and paper mill effluent (Pesonen and Andersson 1992) and in fractions extracted from Baltic salmon (Hakansson et al 1991). Gagne et al(1995) used trout hepatocytes to detect persistent genotoxin compounds in a sediment extract obtained in the vicinity of a creosote-treated wharf, and compared results with chemical analysis for PAHs in the same sediment.…”

“…13 This may explain the reproductive effects reported for fish fed diets high in EOC1. 9 The viability of 'first spawn' cod eggs is known to be lower than in successive spawnings. 14 Perhaps the high EOC1 content of the 'first spawn' eggs observed in this study reduces their viability.…”

“…EOC1 from wild fish has been demonstrated to reduce the number and viability of eggs laid by zebrafish as well as other toxicological effects. 9 Although lipids high in EOC1 have been shown to have biological effects, concentrations of EOC1 and EOBr in the lipids from different tissues in fish has previously not been determined. The present work was initiated to determine the distribution of EOC1 and EOBr + E-mail: Kiceniuk@is.dal.ca 0236 5731/98/USD 17.00 9 1998 Akaddmiai Kiad6, Budapest All rights reserved in various tissues, eggs, and bile of individual cod and thereby obtain an indication of the toxicological mechanisms and potential consequences of humans and other animals being exposed to these unidentified compounds.…”
