In vivo Analgesic activity of methanolic extract of Helianthus annuus seeds

Abstract: The sunflower seed is the seed of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The methanol extract of seeds of Helianthus annuus were screened for analgesic activity in mice model to systematically explore the medicinal values of the plant. Acetic acid induced writhing and hot plate methods were used to confirm the central and peripheral analgesic action. In case of acetic acid-induced writhing test the extract showed significant (P <0.05) analgesic potential at doses 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight (50.35 and 57.85% … Show more

“…Hitherto, peptides with KOR activity have been identified in fungi and vertebrates. ,, Recently, the analgesic activity of a methanolic extract of sunflower seeds was reported and prompted us to investigate whether SFTI-1, one of the main peptides in the extract of sunflower seeds (Figure A,B), might be a novel ligand of the KOR. Indeed, radioligand binding studies revealed significant but moderate displacement of [ 3 H ]-diprenorphine with a micromolar concentration of SFTI-1 in HEK293 cell membrane preparations stably expressing the mouse KOR (Figure C, Table ).…”

“…Inspired by recent studies on the analgesic activity of a methanolic extract of sunflower seeds (H. annuus), we explored the analgesic potential of SFTI-1, a cyclic peptide expressed by sunflower seeds. Leveraging its intrinsic biostability and significant binding at the KORan opioid receptor with increasing attention as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of visceral painhelianorphin peptides were designed by grafting dyn A and difelikefalin-like analogues onto the SFTI-1 scaffold.…”

“…Moreover, Heliopsis sinaloensis is known to possess antioxidant and anti-mutagenic action [7].The antioxidant activity is mostly connected to a high content of phenolic compounds as testified by numerous studies, in particular, for Asteraceae family plants. Islam et al (2016) [8], as well as Karamać et al (2012) [1], for example, studied Helianthus annuus seeds and demonstrated that high content of phenolic compounds favors the expressed antioxidant activity. This work dwells on the study of phenolic compounds in the leaves, flowers, seeds and roots of Heliopsis helianthoides, as well as on establishing the antioxidant activity in these raw materials.…”
