In Vitro Screening of Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Medicinal Plants Growing in Slovakia

Abstract: Traditional medicine usage at the preventive medicine level is comprehensive and plant-based remedies are being prescribed for the treatment of a large scale of diseases by indigenous medical practitioners around the world. The phytochemicals being observed in the fruits and vegetables as well as herbal plants are getting investigated intensively as their important role in the avoidance of diverse human diseases is undoubtful. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of selected medicinal herbs were evaluated… Show more

“…In a study of seven medicinal plants (from five plant families) grown in Slovakia, Gayibov et al [ 30 ] investigated the content of polyphenols and the content of flavonoids, as well as the antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. This study included three plants of the Lamiaceae family: Melissa officinalis , Salvia officinalis and Thymus pannonicus .…”

“…Extracts were prepared from horse chestnut fruits by extraction of crushed raw materials with hot water (1:10), after which the resulting aqueous extracts were evaporated in vacuum to 1/10 of the initial volume and the extract complex was precipitated with a 3-fold amount of 95% alcohol. The antiradical activity was determined by standard protocol of measuring absorbance kinetics of free stable radical 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as described elsewhere (Gayibova et al, 2019). Qualitative chemical composition was determined according to generally accepted methods (Bandiola et al, 2018).…”
