In vitro propagation ofAtractylodes lancea

Abstract: Shoot cultures ofAtractylodes lancea DC. (Compositae) have been established by inoculating the flower bud on Linsmaier-Skoog's medium supplemented with 10(-5) M naphthaleneacetic acid and 10(-5) M 6-benzyl-aminopurine. Shoots were multiplied on a medium containing 10(-6) M 6-benzylaminopurine. Propagated shoots rooted on a medium devoid of any plant growth regulators were transferred to potting soil and finally to the field.

“…In vitro techniques are used in conservation of rare and endangered species (Fay, 1992). Many important Chinese medicinal herbs have been successfully propagated either by organogenesis (Erdei et al, 1981;Hiraoka et al, 1984;Hatano et al, 1986;Matsumoto et al, 1986;Hiraoka and Oyanagi, 1988;Nishioka, 1988;Tsay et al, 1989) or by somatic embryogenesis (Hiraoka et al, 1983;Kitamura et al, 1989;Tsay and Huang, 1998). To date, however, there has been no report of the in vitro propagation of L. wrightii.…”

“…Herein, we indicate that the β-eudesmol/hinesol content ratio in A. lancea rhizomes is highly dependent on genetic factors and suggest that clonal propagation is effective for stabilizing this ratio in A. lancea. A. lancea tissues have been propagated in vitro, particularly tip tissues have been cultured extensively [23]. In particular, Shoyama et al [24] indicated that 6-benzylaminopurine facilitates shoot propagation, and gibberellin stimulates root enlargement in A. lancea.…”

“…To date, tissue culture studies of A. macrocephala have mainly focused on the plant regeneration system, including clonal multiplication of Atractylodes lancea by shoot tip culture [10] and the effect of plant growth regulators on plant regeneration from the auxiliary bud of the Atractylodes species [1,11]. However, there are only a few studies published that treat the establishment of a hairy roots culture system using leaf explants of A. japonica [12].…”
