In vitro phagocytosis of collagens by immortalised human retinal Müller cells

Abstract: Our observations demonstrate that human Müller cells in culture prefer to phagocytose type II collagen. In contrast, the phagocytosis of type IV collagen is comparable with the control coatings. We speculate that the relatively limited collagen phagocytosis by Müller cells supports a possible role for Müller cells in the slow process of vitreoretinal remodelling in adult human eyes.

“…Surprisingly, fish M€ uller cells were found to be able to phagocytose latex beads in vitro, but not in vivo (Wagner & Raymond, 1991). Cultured human (Mano & Puro, 1990;Ponsioen et al 2007) and rabbit (Stolzenburg et al 1992) M€ uller cells are capable of phagocytosing latex beads. More recently, in vitro studies using immortalized human retinal M€ uller glia showed that they can phagocytose and kill bacteria in a time-dependent manner (Singh et al 2014).…”
