In vitro maturation of oocytes as a laboratory approach to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): From oocyte to embryo

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, which in some case leads to infertility. This disorder is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction and polycystic ovarian morphology. Infertile PCOS women that need in vitro fertilization (IVF) have greater risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) if conventional ovarian stimulation is used. In vitro oocyte maturation (IVM) is an alternative technique that prevents OHSS in inferti… Show more

“…Opting for IVF for such patients is always a good choice, but it can lead to complications like OHSS in PCOS patients. In vitro maturation is a safer alternative, preventing OHSS by maturing eggs outside the body [5]. A retrospective study by Shalom et al compared treatment outcomes of IVM with IVF in PCOS patients.…”

“…The ovarian stimulation involved in IVF can pose serious problems in PCOS patients, like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) [4]. To combat that, in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes can be done while using stimulation for a very short period [5].…”

“…The path to understanding and mitigating the challenges posed by PCOS involves exploring innovative approaches in the eld of ART. In vitro maturation (IVM) of immature oocytes obtained from PCOS patients presents a promising strategy to reduce the associated costs and clinical complications often linked with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) 5 . While the birth of healthy infants has been reported after IVM procedures, but the pregnancy rates are notably lower compared to oocytes matured in vivo or using other methods.…”

“…PCOS can have a hormonal imbalances contribute to the characteristic symptoms observed in affected individuals, such as irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, acne, and infertility. 1 Current studies have displayed that miRNAs play an essential role in the progress of PCOS, including inflammation, and ovarian function. miRNAs prevent their translation into proteins.…”
