In vitro Interactions between Bovine Papillomavirus and Human Monocytes and Macrophages

Abstract: Limited data suggest that macrophages play a role in the pathogenesis of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) infections. In the present study, interactions between these cells and BPV-1 were explored by exposing in vitro human blood monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages to purified virions. Immediately or up to 28 days after exposure, cell culture supernatants as well as cell lysates were collected. Interleukin 1 activity was detected in the supernatants of monocytes early after exposure to BPV (0–3 days), but li… Show more

“…HPV particles with oncoproteins E6 and E7 could, theoretically, be transferred to atherosclerotic plaques through monocytes and macrophages recruited to HPV-infected tissue [13,28,29,30,31]. A recent study showed the presence of HR-HPV DNA in 55% of atheromatous coronary arteries collected from 20 patients deceased due to myocardial infarction [12].…”

“…Previous studies have shown that DCs express the α6 integrin receptor, which is associated with viral entry (18,19). Additionally, human monocytes and macrophages are known to be susceptible to bovine papillomavirus infection in vitro (20).…”

“…However, these findings remain contro versial because some groups have not identified HPV in lymphocytes of patients with cervical intraepithelial neo plasia [8]. Finally, Campo et al [2] identified bovine pap illomavirus in PBLs of cows and suggested that these cells may be another site for viral latency, while another group demonstrated the presence of bovine papillomavirus cap sid proteins in experimentally infected monocytes and macrophages [1].…”
