Background: Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Lifestyle changes, physical exercise and intake of healthy diet are some common issues associated with reducing the risk of hypertension. There are several classes of pharmacological agents used in the treatment of hypertension. Angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) cleaves angiotensin I to angiotensin II and inactivates bradykinin. The synthetic ACE inhibitors are used widely to treat cardiovascular disorders. They may cause many adverse effects, including dry cough, allergic reactions and skin rashes, so investigation for new natural sources could be helpful. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitory activities of hydroalcoholic extracts of Nardostachys jatamansi, Prangos ferulacea and Marrubium vulgare. Materials and Methods: ACE inhibitory activity was measured according to the methods of Cushman & Cheung with some modifications. Captopril was used as positive control. Results: The ACE inhibitory activities of hydroalcoholic extracts were as follows; M. vulgare > N. Jatamansi > P. ferulacea. The least IC 50 value was related to the hydroalcoholic extract of M. vulgare (0.791 mg/mL). The IC 50 values of N. Jatamansi and P. ferulacea were 2.147 and 4.057 mg/mL, respectively. Conclusions:The results supported the traditional antihypertensive use of these plants, especially M. vulgare, by inhibitory effects on ACE enzyme.

-Inhibition of α-amylase, enzyme that plays a role in digestion of starch and glycogen, is considered a strategy for the treatment of disorders in carbohydrate uptake, such as diabetes and obesity, as well as, dental caries and periodontal diseases. Plants are an important source of chemical constituents with potential for inhibition of α-amylase and can be used as therapeutic or functional food sources. A review about crude extracts and isolated compounds from plant source that have been tested for α-amylase inhibitory activity has been done. The analysis of the results shows a variety of crude extracts that present α-amylase inhibitory activity and some of them had relevant activity when compared with controls used in the studies. Amongst the phyto-constituents that have been investigated, flavonoids are one of them that demonstrated the highest inhibitory activities with the potential of inhibition related to number of hydroxyl groups in the molecule of the compound. Several phyto-constituents and plant species as α-amylase inhibitors are being reported in this article. Majority of studies have focused on the anti-amylase phenolic compounds.

Many algae have important secretions which are generally used for defensive purposes. These secretions have caught the attention of a number of researchers, as to whether or not these metabolites can be used in medical research. Among these metabolites, caulerpenyne (CYN) which is the main metabolite of the Caulerpa species, has had an important place in Caulerpa research since the beneficial effects related to its determined properties (such as cytotoxic, antiviral, antiproliferative and apoptotic) have been demonstrated in many scientific reports. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of CYN isolated from C. prolifera on alpha-amylase was investigated. The inhibition experiments were done with CYN by a spectrophotometric determination method. In order to evaluate the type of inhibition a Lineweaver-Burk plot was produced. The results obtained from enzyme kinetic studies exhibited a non-competitive type of inhibition, which is characterized by the difference of V max and K M from those of the free enzyme, of alpha-amylase in the presence of CYN. The present study showed that Caulerpa species may be a potential target for the production of diabetic drugs in the light of the results obtained for CYN.
