“…Percentage sperm motility has been recognized as an important spermatozoal trait for male fertility in rainbow trout (Moccia & Munkittrick 1987, Ciereszko & Dabrowski 1994, Lahnsteiner et al 1998, human (Donnelly et al 1998) and poultry (Donoghue 1999). The present study indicates that 91% of the variance in sperm competition of common carp with different percentages of sired larvae in competition can be explained by differences between the sperm of the competent males (different sperm motility, different hatching, different colour, etc).…”

“…This assumption is based on the significant decline in sperm motility among rats similarly exposed to BaP for duration of 10 days (Inyang et al, 2003). Sperm progressive motility is positively correlated with fertilization of oocytes (Donnelly et al, 1998) and pregnancy rates (Jouannet et al, 1988), the decline of which is one of the markers of male reproductive toxicity and also an indicator for the onset of infertility (Perreault, 1997). Post exposures, PAHs undergo an AHH-mediated transformation into reactive metabolites (Ou and Ramos, 1992;Nebert et al, 2000) which subsequently induce ROS production.…”

“…On the other hand, the results of CS (56.1%) and PM (55.6%) here obtained indicated that the spermatzoa can be conserved during one day only, this is due to that citric acid and sugar compounds provide a source of energy enough for the sperm metabolism and to increase motility [37] but can decrease viability. Previous studies indicate that the use of Triladyl can provide substrates such as citric acid, which through a series of chemical reactions favor sperm motility due to an increase of ATP production [38].…”
