In vitro evaluation of root canal preparation with two rotary instrument systems – Pro Taper and Hero Shaper

Abstract: Background and aimsThe purpose of this study was to compare several parameters of root canal preparation using two different rotary Nickel-Titanium instruments: Pro-Taper (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballagigues, Switzerland) and Hero-Shaper (Micro Mega, Besancon, France).MethodsTwelve extracted maxillary premolars were randomly divided into two groups and embedded into a muffle system. All root canals were prepared to size 25 using Pro-Taper or Hero-Shaper rotary instruments. The following parameters were evaluated: … Show more

“…The ProTaper for hand-use (HPT, Dentsply Maillefer) was chosen here because it has a similar convex triangular cross-sectional design to PTG, while it retains the advantages of hand-use instruments [16]. Hero Shaper (Micro-Mega, Besancon, France) has a variable helical angle and an adapted pitch that increases with the taper to avoid the screwing effect of the instrument [17], while it was less flexible than the other three Ni-Ti instruments used in this study.…”

“…Cleaning and shaping is one of the most important steps for the success of root canal treatment. The criteria of canal shaping include developing a continuously tapered funnel shape from the canal orifice to the apex while maintaining the original shape of the Nickel-titanium (Ni Ti) rotary systems have revolutionized root canal instrumentation by shaping the root canal with less complications due to its high flexibility, resiliency and shape memory [3]. Nevertheless, manufacturers keep introducing Ni Ti systems with new designs, manufacturing processes, materials and different kinematics [4].…”
