In vitro evaluation of bioactive properties of banana sap

Abstract: Banana sap is currently designated as a waste subsequent to utilization of pseudo stem in pulp and paper industry as well as other applications which is contributing to the environmental pollution. In the present study, banana sap and its crude extracts were evaluated for antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties. The role of oxidized and un-oxidized banana sap for its antimicrobial potential against a microbial test panel comprising gram positive as well as gram negative bacteria and Ca… Show more

“…The banana pseudo stem extract containing flavanol and flavones is cytotoxic against the cancer cells MCF‐7 (breast cancer) (Gupta et al, 2022). Based on the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, and saponins in banana pseudo stem extract, it showed higher cytotoxicity against HCT‐116 (86.53) and HepG‐2 cell lines (79.06) compared with other banana pseudo stem extracts (Abdel Ghany et al, 2019; Ogbonna et al, 2016).…”

“…Besides, tannins present in banana sap cause the sap to darken when exposed to air, demonstrating appearance of carbohydrate and suggesting its potential for long-term rust prevention with environmentally sustainable properties. 31,32 The main objective of this investigation is to study the electrochemical response of natural plant waste to mitigate the corrosive effects of hydrochloric acid on mild steel. To achieve this, we used a banana sap-water extract (BSWE) to limit the deterioration of mild steel, which is known to be prone to corrosion in acidic environments.…”
