IN VITRO EFFECTS OF POLYPHENOLS EXTRACTED FROM THE AROEIRA PLANT (SCHINUS TEREBINTHIFOLIUS RADDI) ON THE GROWTH OF PROSTATE CANCER CELLS (LNCaP, PC-3 AND DU145)

Abstract: Despite the existence of various types of antineoplastic treatments of prostate cancer, most of them induce apoptosis in the tumor cells by means of synthetic or natural drugs. The aim of this work was to study the antiproliferative action of methanolic and aqueous extracts from the leaves of the aroeira plant (Schinus terebinthifolius) a plant from the Northeast from Brazil over isolated prostate cancer cell cultures. The extracts were tested in isolated cell lineages from non hormone dependent cancers (DU145… Show more

“…A reasonable hypothesis for the IQ antitumor mechanism would be the involvement of signaling pathways mediat ing its modulation of Wnt signaling [74] , which would reaffirm data presented by other studies [67,77] . The Wnt pathway in turn, is related to the p53 pathway (via apoptosis), and published literature has demonstrated its mediation of the apoptosisinducing action of IQ [73] . The induction of apoptosis may be related to caspases, inhibition of ERK phosphorylation, and promotion of JuNK phosphorylation [74] .…”

“…This plant has used in traditional medicine as antipyretic, analgesic and in the treatment of urogenital diseases . Several studies have shown that S. terebinthifolius produce pharmacologically important substances, such as anticancer (Bendaoud et al, 2010;Matsuo et al, 2011), antimicrobial (Silva et al, 2010;Pereira et al, 2011), antioxidant (Bendaoud et al, 2010), healing purposes (Estevão et al, 2013) and antiproliferative (Queires et al, 2013).…”
