The most commonly used denture base material, polymethyl methacrylate, lacks ideal mechanical properties, which are reflected in its relatively high failure rate. Several methods have been explored to reinforce the material and reduce the cost of denture repair and replacement. In this study, various surface modified filler particles at different concentrations were dispersed in conventional and high-impact denture base materials and tested for their improvement in mechanical properties. Inorganic filler particles were coated with different silane coupling agents using an ultrasonic device. The particulates were dispersed in the resin and the composites polymerised through an innovative dual-cure technique. Charpy impact test, single-edge notch three-point bend fracture toughness test and Biaxial Flexural Strength (BFS) were performed on the specimens. The results showed that mechanical properties of the denture base resin can be improved by incorporating filler particles; however, the surface characteristics, quantity and level of dispersion of the particles play critical role in the mechanical behaviour of the composites. The results of this study are a promising step towards developing more fracture-resistant denture base materials.

Background and Aim: The complications of unwanted surface roughness of composite restorations are highly common due to the increasing use of this restorative material. Therefore, the present study was designed to compare the effect of four finishing and polishing (F&P) tools on surface roughness of microhybrid resin composites. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed on 42 samples of CLEARFIL™ AP-X microhybrid composite, which were divided into four groups of different F&P methods and one control group as follows: control (n=2), Flexi-D discs (n=10), Flexi-D + diamond polishing paste (n=10), Intensive twisted rubber polisher (n=10), and Rubber Polisher Teco (n=10). The samples were examined by profilometry. Surface roughness (Ra) of each specimen was measured at three points, and the mean value was considered as surface roughness. The results were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc statistical tests. Results: The surface roughness of composite discs in an ascending order was as follows: control (0.048±0.014 µm), Flexi-D disc (0.179±0.132 µm), Intensive twisted rubber polisher (0.233±0.105 µm), Flexi-D disc with diamond polishing paste (0.232±0.141 µm), and Rubber Polisher Teco (0.251±0.087 µm; P=0.001). The difference between the two groups of Flexi-D disc with diamond polishing paste and Rubber Polisher Teco was not statistically significant (P=0.742). The level of surface roughness in Flexi-D samples was significantly lower than that of the other samples (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the Flexi-D disc is the best F&P tool for microhybrid resin composites.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness (Ra), and the morphology and composition of filler particles of different composites submitted to toothbrushing and water storage. Disc‐shaped specimens (15 mm × 2 mm) were made from five composites: two conventional (Z100™, and Filtek™ Supreme Ultra Universal, 3M), one “quick‐cure” (Estelite ∑ Quick, Tokuyama), one fluoride‐releasing (Beautiful II, Shofu), and one self‐adhering (Vertise Flow, Kerr) composite. Samples were finished/polished using aluminum oxide discs (Sof‐Lex, 3M), and their surfaces were analyzed by profilometry (n = 5) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM; n = 3) at 1 week and after 30,000 toothbrushing cycles and 6‐month water storage. Ra data were analyzed by two‐way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Filler particles morphology and composition were analyzed by SEM and X‐ray dispersive energy spectroscopy, respectively. Finishing/polishing resulted in similar Ra for all the composites, while toothbrushing and water storage increased the Ra of all the tested materials, also changing their surface morphology. Beautifil II and Vertise Flow presented the highest Ra after toothbrushing and water storage. Filler particles were mainly composed of silicon, zirconium, aluminum, barium, and ytterbium. Size and morphology of fillers, and composition of the tested composites influenced their Ra when samples were submitted to toothbrushing and water storage.
